This lake is one of the clearest in the world. It is also one of the deepest lakes in Japan. Steep walls of rock surround the water. No rivers flow into or out of the lake.

In the summer, white fog often covers the lake. This fog stays for about 100 days each year. Some local legends say seeing the water brings bad luck. This makes the lake feel very mysterious.

Many types of trees grow on the hills. You can find evergreen forests and birch forests there. Some fish, like salmon and trout, live in the water. People can hike a trail along the rim. The trail is seven kilometers long. You cannot go down to the shore. You must view the lake from tall towers.
