It is one of the largest in the world. The mountain sits inside a huge, bowl-shaped area. This area is called a caldera.

A caldera forms when the ground falls in. This happened after four huge eruptions a long time ago. These eruptions were very large. One eruption sent ash across a whole region.

Inside the caldera, there are five peaks. These are known as the Five Mountains of Aso. The highest peak is Mt. Taka. It is 1,592 meters tall.

Another peak is Mt. Naka. This peak is still active today. It lets out smoke and has eruptions. The north crater has been active many times since 1974.

Volcanic ash from the mountain is very useful. It travels down the Chikugo River. The ash helps keep the tidal flats of the Ariake Sea healthy. You can also find onsen, which are hot springs, near the mountain. Many people visit the national park to hike or see the views.
