It is a stratovolcano, which is a tall mountain built by layers of ash and lava. The volcano has three main peaks. The highest is Kita-dake. The southern peak is Minami-dake. This peak is often the most active.

Long ago, Sakurajima was a separate island. In 1914, a very large eruption happened. Huge flows of lava poured out of the mountain. This lava filled the water between the island and the mainland. This turned the island into a peninsula.

The volcano stays busy today. It often lets out clouds of ash. This ash makes the soil very fertile, which means it is great for growing plants. People grow large white radishes there. They also grow sweet oranges. Many people live near the volcano. Scientists study the area to keep people safe. They watch the mountain closely to predict when it might erupt. This helps the nearby city of Kagoshima prepare for any changes.
