It sits on Vindhyagiri Hill in India. A man named Chavundaraya ordered its making. He was a leader in a ruling family. The statue was made around the year 983 CE. It is carved from one single block of granite. This makes it a monolith, which means one big stone.

The statue shows a man named Bahubali. He is a figure in the Jain faith. Jains believe in peace and living a simple life. The statue shows Bahubali standing very still. He is in a pose called kayotsarga. This means he is standing still for prayer. Because he stayed so still, vines grew around his legs. There is even an anthill behind him.

Every twelve years, people hold a big festival. It is called Mahamastakabhisheka.
