The Sagrada Família is a famous church in Barcelona, Spain.

It is a special place for faith and art. This building is the largest unfinished Catholic church in the world. People travel from everywhere to see its unique look. The design is very different from most other churches. It uses many curves and shapes instead of just straight lines.

This style is sometimes called Art Nouveau. Many people believe it is one of a kind in history.

Building such a huge church is a very big job.

It works through many different steps over many years. For a long time, workers carved every stone by hand. Now, they use modern tools like computers to help. They use computer-aided design to plan the shapes. They also use a machine called a CNC milling machine. This machine helps shape the stone off-site. This way of working helps the builders move much faster.

The story of the church began a long time ago.

A man named José María Bocabella wanted to build it. He was inspired by a visit to Italy. Construction started on March 19, 1882. At first, an architect named Francisco de Paula del Villar led the work. He planned a standard Gothic style church. But he left the project in 1883. Then, a famous architect named Antoni Gaudí took over. Gaudí changed the design into something much more amazing.

Gaudí worked on the church until he died in 1926.

When he died, less than one quarter was finished. The project faced many hard times later on. During the Spanish Civil War, some plans were lost in a fire. This made the work very difficult for new architects. They had to use old photos to rebuild the plans. Today, the building is mostly done. The structure should be finished around June 2026. Some decorative details might take until 2034.

The church is also a record-breaker for its height.

On October 30, 2025, it became the tallest church in the world. A central tower reached 162.91 meters during this time. This allowed it to pass the Ulm Minster in Germany. By February 20, 2026, the tower reached 172.5 meters. This tall tower is a part of the main steeple. The money to build it comes from private donations. Visitors pay to enter and help pay for the work.
