The Milan Cathedral is a massive and beautiful church in Italy.

People often call it the Duomo. This name comes from the Latin word "domus," which means home. It shows that the church is a home for God. It is the largest church in the Italian Republic. It is also one of the largest churches in the whole world.

Many people visit to see its grand design and feel its history.

Building such a huge structure was a very long job. It took nearly six centuries to finish the work. Construction started in 1386 and lasted until 1965.

Workers used special white marble from the Candoglia quarry. Gian Galeazzo Visconti helped by giving the workers exclusive use of this marble. He also made sure they did not have to pay taxes. This helped the building grow much faster than it might have otherwise.

Many different people helped design and build the cathedral over time. In 1387, a group called the "Fabbrica del Duomo" managed the work. They had 300 employees and were led by Simone da Orsenigo. Later, French engineers like Nicolas de Bonaventure and Jean Mignot brought new ideas. Mignot even helped engineers improve their tools to lift heavy stones. These experts wanted to use the newest styles from across Europe.

There are many famous parts of the cathedral to notice. One very tall spire is 108.5 meters high.

It holds a golden statue called the Madonnina. Because Milan is often foggy, people look for this statue to see if the weather is clear. The cathedral also has a large octagonal cupola. This dome was finished between 1500 and 1510 under Ludovico Sforza. It features many statues of saints and prophets inside.

The cathedral has survived many big changes through history. During World War II, it suffered some damage from Allied bombing. However, it was quickly repaired and became a place for people to gather. Even today, the building needs constant care because of pollution.

To help pay for this, people can "adopt" one of the 135 spires. This keeps the ancient marble looking bright and beautiful for many more years.
