Building the cathedral was a very long job. Work began in 1386. It took nearly six hundred years to finish! The last small details were done in 1965. Many workers helped over many years. They used white marble from a place called Candoglia.

A very tall spire reaches into the sky. It is 108.5 meters high.

At the top is a golden statue. This is the Madonnina. Milan is often foggy or misty. People look for the statue through the clouds. Seeing the Madonnina is a sign of good weather.

The cathedral has many beautiful parts. It has large windows made of colored glass. It also has many statues on its walls. Even today, people work to keep the marble clean. Some people even help pay to care for the spires.
