He lived during the late Renaissance period. He was known for his great technical skills. Fontana was very good at measuring things. He worked as a plasterer and a mason first. Later, he became a master builder. He built many important things in Rome and Naples. His work helped shape the look of these cities. People remember him for his strength and his skill.

Fontana had a very specific way of working. He often used arcades in his designs. An arcade is a row of arches. He liked to use these as main features. He also used many decorative reliefs and festoons. These are carvings used to decorate walls. He often used the same patterns for different buildings. For example, he used a style from the Lateran Palace elsewhere. This showed his preference for a single, steady solution.

His career grew when he met Cardinal Montalto. The Cardinal became Pope Sixtus V later on. This changed Fontana's life in a big way. The Pope named him Architect of St. Peter's. He even gave him the title of Knight of the Golden Spur. Fontana added a lantern to the dome at St. Peter's. He also worked on the Basilica di San Giovanni in Laterano. He built a large two-story portico there. He was a member of the Accademia di San Luca in 1585.

One of his most amazing feats happened in 1586.

He moved a huge Vatican obelisk to St. Peter's Square. This stone pillar weighed 320 tons. It was a massive job of engineering. He used 800 men to help him. He also used 160 horses for the work. They used many ropes and pulleys to lift it. The astronomer Ignazio Danti helped him with this task. Fontana also moved three other ancient obelisks in Rome.

Fontana's life had many changes and turns. After his patron died, he worked for Pope Clement VIII. Later, he faced some hard times and left Rome. He moved to Naples to work for a Duke. In Naples, he designed canals and a royal palace. His work on a canal helped find the ancient city of Pompeii. His son, Giulio Cesare, also became a royal architect. Fontana died in 1607 and was buried in Naples. His family continued his legacy of building great things.
