To make his buildings, Rastrelli mixed different ideas together. He took the latest fashions from Italy. Then, he added traditions from the Muscovite Baroque style. This mix created a look that was easy to recognize. He worked on many different types of structures. He built large palaces for rulers and churches for worship. He also decorated the inside of many important buildings.

Even after he stopped building, people remembered his name. Empress Elizabeth died in 1762 before he could finish his tall tower. The next ruler, Catherine II, did not like his style. She called his Baroque buildings "whipped cream." Rastrelli retired to a place called Courland. He was elected to the Imperial Academy of Arts before he died in 1771. Today, there are busts of him in Saint Petersburg and Tsarskoye Selo.
