Many people visit to see the beautiful water and stone. It is one of the most famous fountains in the whole world.

The water flows from a long system called an aqueduct. This system started in ancient Rome to bring fresh water to the city.

An old pipe named the Aqua Virgo still brings water to the fountain today. This water travels a long path to reach the site. The fountain is made mostly from Travertine stone. This stone was taken from a place near Tivoli, east of Rome. The water creates a scene of taming the waves with rock and spray.

Designing the fountain took many years and many different people. In 1629, Pope Urban VIII asked for new designs. Later, in 1730, Pope Clement XII held a contest to find a designer. An architect named Nicola Salvi won the job after a big outcry in Rome.

Salvi worked on the project until he died in 1751. Then, Giuseppe Pannini helped finish the work in 1762. The fountain was officially opened by Pope Clement XIII in May of that year.

The fountain is filled with many amazing statues and details. In the center, a large statue of Oceanus sits on a shell chariot.

Two sea horses and two Tritons, who are sea spirits, help guide him. On the sides, statues show Abundance and Salubrity. Abundance pours water from an urn. Salubrity holds a cup for a snake to drink from. These figures are part of the grand design built into the Palazzo Poli building.

Visitors love to follow a special tradition at the fountain. They throw a coin into the water over their left shoulder.

People do this to hope they will return to Rome one day. About 3,000 euros are thrown into the water every single day. This money is given to a charity called Caritas to help others. The fountain is also famous in movies like "Roman Holiday" and "La Dolce Vita."
