It sits near the headwaters of the Qingshui River. The mountain is made of many flat-topped peaks called mesas. The north peak is named Beitai Ding or Yedou Feng. This peak is the highest point in all of North China. Many people visit this mountain because it is a sacred Buddhist site. It is one of the Four Sacred Mountains in Chinese Buddhism.

This mountain is the home of Mañjuśrī, the Bodhisattva of wisdom. People often call the mountain "Clear Cool Mountain." This name comes from an old holy book called the Avataṃsaka Sūtra. The book says Mañjuśrī lives on a clear and cold mountain. Some people believe the Bodhisattva appears on the mountain in many ways. He might look like a monk or a regular person. He might even appear as unusual five-colored clouds.

The history of the mountain is very long and rich. It was a sacred place for Taoist pilgrims on the Silk Road in the 10th century. The mountain is also important to Tibetan Buddhism. Some of the wooden buildings here are very old. They come from the Tang dynasty, which was from 618 to 907. The Nanchan Temple was built in 782. The East Hall of Foguang Temple was built in 857. Historians found these buildings in 1937 and 1938.

There are many amazing things to see on Mount Wutai. The mountain has over 53 sacred monasteries and temples. Some major temples include Xiantong Temple and Tayuan Temple. You can also find the Pusading Temple and Shouning Temple there. In 2005, a giant statue of Maha Manjushree was given to China. This statue came from the foreign minister of Nepal. The mountain was named a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2009. It is also a top tourist attraction in China.

The weather on the mountain changes a lot during the year. It has a subarctic climate, which means it is often quite cold. July is usually the warmest and wettest month. The temperature in July is around 20°C. In January, the temperature can drop to around -10°C. It can get even colder than that sometimes. On January 15, 1958, it reached a very low -44.8°C.
