It is located in Ikaruga, within the Nara Prefecture. The temple's full name is the Learning Temple of the Flourishing Law. It serves as both a monastery and a place for students to study. This site is one of the oldest Buddhist locations in the country. Many people visit it today as a site for pilgrimage. It is also a very popular spot for tourists to explore.

The temple complex is split into two main areas. The first part is called the Sai-in, or the western area.

This area holds the Kondō and the tall five-story pagoda. The second part is the Tō-in, located 122 meters to the east.

This eastern area contains the octagonal Yumedono, which is the Hall of Dreams. The whole complex also includes libraries, dining halls, and quarters for monks. These buildings show styles from China, Korea, and India.

Prince Shōtoku founded the temple in the year 607.

At first, the temple was known by the name Wakakusadera. It was built to honor the prince's father. The temple was dedicated to Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of healing. In the year 670, lightning struck and burned the original buildings down. Workers began rebuilding the complex shortly after that event. The current buildings were mostly finished by around the year 711.

Some parts of Hōryū-ji are incredibly old.

The Kondō is widely known as the oldest wooden building in the world. The five-story pagoda stands 32.45 meters high. A tree ring study in 2001 showed its central pillar was cut in 594. The temple also holds over 180 National Treasures of Japan. In 1993, it became one of Japan's first UNESCO World Heritage Sites.

History has brought many changes to the temple. In 1949, a fire broke out while workers were repairing the Kondō.

This accident destroyed a famous mural from the Asuka period. Because of this, January 26 is now a day for fire prevention. During the Second World War, some parts were hidden in the hills to keep them safe. Today, the temple remains a vital center for the Shōtoku sect. It connects the past to the present through its many treasures.
