He started a unique branch of Buddhism called Nichiren Buddhism. This faith is based on one specific holy book. That book is the Lotus Sutra. Nichiren believed this sutra held the highest truth. He thought it was the only way to find peace. This path was for everyone in the world. It did not matter if you were rich or poor.

His way of practicing was very simple and direct. He taught that people could reach Buddhahood in this life. To do this, people could chant a special phrase. This phrase is Namu Myoho Renge Kyo. It is the title of the Lotus Sutra. Nichiren said this single chant held all Buddhist teachings. By saying it, people could change their own lives. He also believed this would create a Pure Land on earth.

Nichiren spent many years studying different Buddhist traditions. Between the years 1233 and 1253, he traveled to learn. He studied the Tendai, Pure Land, and Shingon schools. He also visited Mount Hiei and Mount Koya. On April 28, 1253, he made a big declaration. He spoke about the importance of the Lotus Sutra. At this time, he changed his name to Nichiren. The name "Nichi" means the sun or light. "Ren" stands for the lotus flower.

Nichiren was born on April 6, 1222. He was born in a village called Kominato. He described himself as the son of a sea-diver. This was different from other religious leaders of his time. Many other founders came from noble or samurai families. Nichiren wrote many books during his life. He wrote 523 complete writings and 248 fragments. His ideas were very strong and sometimes caused trouble. He told the government to support the Lotus Sutra. He warned that ignoring it would cause disasters.

Because of his views, Nichiren faced many hard times. The government sent him into exile two different times. Some of his followers were even imprisoned or killed. He saw this hard treatment as proof of his truth. Even after he died, his tradition grew very large. Today, there are more than forty different Nichiren groups. Some are traditional temple schools like Nichiren-shū. Others are modern groups like Soka Gakkai.
