Hōjō Tokimune was a very important leader in Japan. He was the eighth shikken of the Kamakura shogunate. A shikken is a regent who rules the land. He ruled from the year 1268 to 1284.

Tokimune was the second son of a man named Tokiyori. He belonged to the powerful Hōjō clan. From his birth, people saw him as a future leader. He took power when he was only 18 years old. At this time, the Hōjō regents held almost all the power. They were more powerful than the Emperor and the shōgun.

Tokimune faced a huge crisis right after he started ruling. The Mongol leader, Kublai Khan, wanted Japan to follow him. The Mongols sent messengers to demand this relationship. Many people in Japan wanted to agree to the demand. However, Tokimune decided to reject the Mongol demands.

He sent the messengers away many times. In 1275, he had five messengers beheaded. In 1279, five more messengers were beheaded in Hakata. These events led to great tension between the two lands. Today, graves for those messengers still exist in Kamakura.

Because of these choices, two big invasions happened. The first Mongol invasion occurred in 1274. The second invasion happened in 1281.

During the second war, the Japanese people prayed for victory. They asked temples and shrines to pray for them. A huge typhoon hit the area during the war. This storm helped the Japanese forces win. People called this storm the "divine wind" or Kamikaze. Tokimune led the defense against the Mongol Empire. He worked hard to prepare his people for the fight.

Tokimune was also a very religious man. He was a student of Zen Buddhism.

He asked his teacher, Mugaku Sogen, for advice on how to be brave. His teacher told him to sit in meditation. This helped him find strength within himself. Tokimune helped Zen Buddhism spread through all of Japan. It became very popular with the samurai warriors. He also helped create a code of honor for them. This code included ideas like loyalty and martial arts. He even built the Engaku-ji monastery to honor fallen samurai.

We can still see Tokimune's story in many places today. He is a character in the video game Civilization VI. In the game, his ability is called "Divine Wind."

He was also a character in a 2001 TV drama. This show showed his life from his youth until his death. Tokimune died in 1284. On the very day he died, he became a Zen monk. His life changed how the samurai lived and prayed. His choices helped shape the history of Japan.
