It is a very important scripture for many people in East Asia. Many different schools of Buddhism were built using its teachings as a foundation. For example, the Tiantai school in China and the Tendai school in Japan come from this book. The Nichiren school in Japan is also based on it. Some scholars say it is the most famous of all Buddhist writings. It offers a new way to look at the path to enlightenment.

One of the most important ideas in the book is the "One Vehicle." This concept says there is really only one path to becoming a Buddha. The sutra explains that different Buddhist practices are actually "skillful means."

This means the Buddha changes his teaching style to fit each person's needs. He uses parables and stories to help his followers understand deep truths. Some people see this as a way to bring all different teachings together. Others see it as a way to show that one path is the most important. This idea helps many different types of people find their way.

The history of this text includes many important translations. The original title in Sanskrit is the Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra. This name means "The Discourse on the White Lotus of the True Doctrine."

A famous translator named Kumarajiva created a version in Chinese. His translation is called the Miàofǎ Liánhuá jīng. Other versions exist in Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, and Vietnamese. Even Old Uyghur texts have used versions of this title. These many languages show how far the ideas have traveled over time.

Many people find hope in the sutra's message about equality. The text claims that every single living being can become a Buddha.

This includes monks and nuns, but also regular people. It even includes women and non-human beings like nagas. One story tells of a little Dragon Girl who shows that women can reach enlightenment. Even people who seem like enemies can achieve this goal. The sutra says that anyone who hears the teaching will not fail. This makes the path feel open to everyone in the world.

Finally, the Lotus Sutra teaches something special about the Buddha's life. It says his lifespan is immeasurable and lasts forever.

Some people believe he did not truly pass away into final Nirvana. Instead, he only appeared to do so as a skillful means. He is said to still be active and teaching in our world today. The text suggests that many Buddhas can exist at the same time. This creates a sense of a timeless and connected universe.
