The Lotus Sūtra is one of the most influential and venerated scriptures in Mahāyāna Buddhism.

Its Sanskrit title, *Saddharma Puṇḍarīka Sūtra*, translates to "The Discourse on the White Lotus of the True Doctrine." This text serves as the foundational scripture for several major Buddhist traditions. These include the Chinese Tiantai school and its derivatives, such as the Japanese Tendai and Nichiren schools. It also influenced the Korean Cheontae and Vietnamese Thiên Thai schools. Furthermore, it has left a mark on Chan and Zen Buddhism. Many scholars view it as a radical re-vision of the Buddhist path.

At the heart of the Lotus Sūtra are two central and transformative doctrines. The first is the concept of the One Vehicle, or *ekayāna*. This teaching suggests that all various Buddhist paths are actually parts of a single, supreme path. The second doctrine concerns the nature of the Buddha himself. It claims his lifespan is immeasurable and eternal. According to this view, the Buddha's passing into final Nirvana was merely an appearance. This appearance was a "skillful means" used to teach others.

The mechanism of the "One Vehicle" relies on the concept of *upāya*, or skillful means. *Upāya* refers to the pedagogical strategies Buddhas use to teach effectively. Because people have different capacities, the Buddha adapts his methods to meet their specific needs. He uses parables, allegories, and various causal explanations to guide disciples. The sūtra reveals that many seemingly different practices are actually expressions of this one vehicle. This approach allows the Buddha to reconcile many different teachings into a unified whole. Some interpret this as a way to include all practices, while others see it as a hierarchy.

A third major teaching is the universal potential for Buddhahood. The Lotus Sūtra asserts that all living beings possess the capacity to become Buddhas. It claims that anyone who hears the Dharma will eventually achieve awakening. This includes a wide variety of beings, such as monks, nuns, and laypeople. The text even extends this promise to non-human beings like nagas. It even includes figures who might seem like villains, such as Devadatta. This message promotes a profound sense of equality and inclusivity.

The text provides specific examples to support this message of equality. For instance, the story of the Dragon Girl suggests that women can achieve Buddhahood. This challenges older views regarding the spiritual capacity of different groups. Some scholars suggest that the concept of "Buddha-nature" is implicitly present throughout the text. This idea implies that the potential for enlightenment is an inherent quality in everyone. By affirming this, the sūtra seeks to provide a teaching that excludes no one.

Regarding the nature of Buddhas, the sūtra introduces a sense of cosmic timelessness. It states that the Buddha achieved Buddhahood innumerable eons ago. He remains active in the world to teach the Dharma continually. This is illustrated by the appearance of the Buddha Prabhūtaratna. He appeared to show that multiple Buddhas can exist in the same time and place. This contrasts with earlier views that focused on a single historical Buddha. The sūtra uses large numbers and vast measurements of space to describe this reality.

Historically, the Lotus Sūtra has been translated into many different languages across Asia. The Chinese translator Kumarajiva produced a highly influential version. His translation, *Miàofǎ Liánhuá jīng*, is widely used in East Asian traditions. Other major translations exist in Japanese, Korean, Tibetan, and Vietnamese. Even Old Uyghur texts contain versions of the title. The Japanese priest Nichiren emphasized the importance of the title itself. He advocated for the chanting of the title as a primary religious practice.

Ultimately, the Lotus Sūtra connects the individual's journey to the broader cosmos. It presents the universe as a stage for mythological and spiritual drama. The text describes how the Buddha's realm is not separate from our own world. Instead, these realms can be seen as non-dual or deeply interconnected. This perspective shifts the focus from escaping the world to transforming it. By teaching that all beings are connected to the Buddha, it creates a unified spiritual vision.
