Many people call it the Book of Changes. It is one of the oldest Chinese classics in history. This book is used for a practice called divination. Divination is a way to seek guidance or answers. For a long time, people have used it to understand the world. It is a very important part of East Asian thought.

To use the book, people follow a special way it works. This way is called cleromancy. It uses bundles of yarrow stalks to find answers. People move the stalks to get six random numbers. These numbers are between 6 and 9. Each set of numbers makes a pattern called a hexagram.

There are 64 different hexagrams in the book. Each hexagram is made of six stacked lines. Some lines are solid and some are broken. These patterns are arranged in a special order. This order is known as the King Wen sequence.

The history of this book goes back a long way. It started in the Western Zhou period. This was between 1000 and 750 BC. Some scholars believe the text was put together by 827 BC. This was during the reign of King Xuan of Zhou. A copy was found on bamboo and wooden slips. This shows the book was used by all levels of society by 300 BC.

Some people say the book was written by King Wen or the Duke of Zhou. Others link it to a legendary ruler named Fuxi. Fuxi is said to have created eight trigrams to study the world.

Many important facts are found within the text. The book has 64 hexagrams with special names. Each hexagram has a short statement and six line statements. These lines can be very mysterious or cryptic. Some lines even include poetry or stories from history. In 136 BC, Emperor Wu of Han named it a classic. He called it the first among the classics.

Later, the book was even set in stone. This helped make it a standard text for two thousand years.

The I Ching connects to many big ideas. It is linked to ideas like yin and yang. These ideas describe how things change in the world. The book also has ten commentaries called the Ten Wings. These writings add deep thoughts to the original text. Many people use the book to help make moral choices. They look to it for guidance in life.
