Stoicism is a special way of thinking and living.

It teaches people how to use self-discipline every day. The goal is to improve your own character. Ancient Stoics believed the whole universe follows a logical order. They called this rational order "logos." This idea connects how the world works with how people should act. By following reason, a person can live a well-reasoned life. This makes Stoicism a very organized system of ideas.

To understand life, Stoics used three main subjects. These are called logic, physics, and ethics.

Logic is the study of how to reason well. It helps people tell the difference between truth and lies. Ethics is about being a good person through virtue. It teaches emotional self-control and a calm mind. This helps people find lasting happiness, which they called "eudaimonia." They believed people should align their lives with the natural order of the world.

This way of thinking started a long time ago.

Zeno of Citium founded the school around 300 BCE. He taught his ideas in Athens, Greece. He gathered in a public place called the Stoa Poikile. This was a painted porch with many beautiful scenes. Because he taught in public, the name "Stoicism" comes from that porch. Zeno learned from the Cynic tradition. His ideas grew and spread across the ancient Greek and Roman worlds.

Many important thinkers helped shape these ideas over many years.

A man named Chrysippus was a very important leader. He was the third head of the school in the 3rd century BCE. He built a great system of logic using propositions. A proposition is a simple statement that is either true or false. He also used connectives like "if," "and," and "or." These tools help build complex arguments from simple ones. His work helped make Stoicism one of the great systems of the classical world.

Stoicism stayed popular for many centuries.

It was very popular among educated people in the Roman Empire. Famous followers included the Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius. Other well-known thinkers were Seneca and Epictetus. Even though the school declined after the 4th century CE, its ideas did not vanish. Stoic ideas helped shape later movements like Neostoicism during the Renaissance. Today, Stoic ideas even help inspire modern ways to talk about mental health and therapy.
