Materialism is a major way of thinking about the world.

It is a form of monism, which means it uses one single idea to explain everything. This idea is that matter is the most important substance in nature. Materialists believe that all things come from material interactions. This includes things like the human mind and our consciousness. They think these things depend on physical processes in the brain.

Some thinkers also use the term physicalism to describe this view. Physicalism includes things like energy, forces, and even space and time.

How this view works can vary between different thinkers. Some follow a path called reductionism. This is the idea that everything can be explained by smaller parts. For example, a big object might be explained by its tiny pieces. However, some people prefer non-reductive materialism. This view says that some things are real even if they are not easy to explain with basic physics. Jerry Fodor was one thinker who held this view. He believed that subjects like psychology have their own special rules.

These rules might be invisible if you only look at tiny particles.

This way of thinking has a very long history. It began to grow in many places during the Axial Age. This was a time between 800 and 200 BC. In ancient India, thinkers like Kanada worked on these ideas around 600 BC. They were early supporters of atomism, which is the study of tiny particles. In Greece, thinkers like Leucippus and Democritus also studied atoms. They believed everything came from atoms moving in a void.

The poet Lucretius wrote about these ideas in a famous work. He explained how things like wind and sound happen through moving particles.

Many famous names appear in the history of materialism. In China, a thinker named Wang Chong lived around 100 AD. In the 1800s, Ludwig Feuerbach wrote about how religion relates to human nature. This idea later influenced Karl Marx. Marx developed historical materialism to explain how societies change. He believed that how people produce things affects their social structure. Later, Friedrich Engels helped develop ideas about a materialist view of nature.

These thinkers all used the idea of matter to explain the world in different ways.

Materialism is often compared to other big ideas. It is the opposite of idealism, which says the mind is most important. It also differs from dualism, which says there are two different kinds of reality. Some people believe in pluralism, which means there are many different kinds of things. In modern times, philosophers like Paul and Patricia Churchland have explored new ideas. They discussed eliminative materialism, which looks at how we talk about the mind. These debates show how much people wonder about the nature of existence.
