Idealism

Idealism is a big way of thinking about our world.

It is a set of ideas about what is most real. Many idealists believe that mind, spirit, or consciousness is the most important thing. They might say that reality is actually a mental construct. This means that ideas are the highest form of reality. This way of thinking is very different from materialism. Materialism says that physical things are what matter most. Idealism suggests that consciousness comes first.

There are two main ways to look at this idea. The first way is called ontological idealism. This view holds that all of reality is mental in some way. It suggests that everything is grounded in a mental basis. The second way is called epistemological idealism. This is a way of looking at how we know things. It says all our knowledge is based on mental structures. Even if a real world exists, we only know it through our minds.

These ideas have very long histories in many places. In India, early thinkers in Vedanta argued for a deep consciousness. They believed this consciousness was the true nature of reality. In Mahayana Buddhism, the Yogācāra school taught a "mind-only" view. This was based on how people experience things. In ancient Greece, the thinker Plato had famous ideas. He believed that perfect, unchanging ideas were the highest reality.

Many different people have shared these views over time. Immanuel Kant was a famous thinker in the early modern period. He argued for transcendental idealism. This means our knowledge of reality relies on mental structures. Another thinker, George Berkeley, held a view called immaterialism. He believed there are no physical objects without experience. In the late 1800s, thinkers like F.H. Bradley also explored these ideas. Even today, people like David Chalmers study how these ideas fit together.

Idealism helps us connect how we think to what we see. It makes us wonder if the world is exactly as it looks. Some thinkers focus on tiny things, which is called micro-idealism. Others look at the whole universe, called cosmic idealism. Some believe that many different minds exist at once. Others believe in one single, great unity. These big questions help philosophers study the link between mind and matter.
