The word can mean a way, a path, or a road. Many people believe the Tao is the source of everything in the universe. It is seen as the fundamental principle that keeps the world working. Some thinkers call it the Absolute Truth or the Ultimate Reality. It is the natural order that stays behind everything we see.

Even though the world is always changing, the Tao stays the same. It is described as being formless and invisible. You cannot see it or hear it with your senses. It is also hard to grasp with your mind. Because it is so subtle, it is very difficult to describe with words.

Many ancient writings explain how the Tao works. The Tao Te Ching says it existed before heaven and earth. It is often called the Mother of the universe. This is because it gives life to all living things. The Tao does not try to be a master or a boss. It clothes and feeds all creatures without asking for credit. It reaches everywhere, like a path that goes to the left and the right. It is often compared to water. Water is soft and quiet, but it is also very powerful.

Just like water, the Tao is always moving and renewing itself.

History tells us about important people and books related to the Tao. The Tao Te Ching is one of the most famous books on this subject. Another important text is called the Ultra Supreme Elder Lord's Ultra Plainness Scripture. Some stories say the famous thinker Lao Tzu met a special being called the Ultimate One Original Lord. He learned secret teachings from her at Mountain Loe. In some traditions, the Elder Lord is seen as an embodiment of the Tao itself. Many different divine figures in mythology are also seen as parts of the Tao. These stories help people understand this deep and mysterious concept.

There are many specific names and ideas in these traditions. For example, the Ultimate One is said to create heaven and earth. Some ancient classics describe a goddess who represents the Tao. She has many names, like Holy Mother the Original Lord. She is also called the Uncreated Original Empress. These names show how the Tao is seen as a feminine force. The Eight Trigrams are also used to represent the Tao. One set of trigrams shows the state of a being before it is born. The other set shows the state of a being after it enters the material world.

The Tao connects to many other ways of thinking in East Asia. It is shared with ideas in Confucianism and Buddhism. Some people use the word Tao to talk about the right way to live. They might use it to mean a state of spiritual perfection. Others see it as the flow of the universe or a natural pattern. It is closely linked to qi, which is the essential energy of life. People often look to nature to learn how to follow the Tao. By watching the natural world, they try to find balance. They seek to live in harmony with the great flow of all things.
