Yin and yang are ancient ideas from Chinese philosophy.

They describe two cosmic forces that act as opposites. However, these forces are also complementary and work together. They interact to support and keep each other going. This creates a dynamic system where the whole is greater than its parts. Both sides are needed to keep everything together.

How does this system work in the world? Many believe the universe began from a primary energy called qi. This material energy organizes itself into cycles of yin and yang. This organization leads to the creation of matter and form. Yin is seen as passive, quiet, and receptive. In contrast, yang is active, bright, and expansive. You can see these patterns in many natural cycles. For example, they appear in the changing seasons and the movement of landscapes.

The history of these ideas goes back thousands of years. The concept of Taiji describes a state of absolute potential. This is the oneness that exists before yin and yang begin. This state is sometimes contrasted with an even older idea called wuji. In Chinese mythology, the organization of qi creates the "10 thousand things." These things exist between Heaven and Earth and include all humans. These ancient thoughts have shaped how people view the entire cosmos.

There are many specific details and names linked to these forces. The word yin originally meant the shady side of a hill. The word yang meant the bright, sunny side of a hill. These names even appear in Chinese place names today. For instance, Hengyang refers to the south side of a mountain. Luoyang refers to the north bank of a river. In Japan, these characters help name different regions of the island of Honshu.

These ideas connect to many different parts of life. They are a main part of traditional Chinese medicine. They also guide many martial arts like kung fu and tai chi. Other exercises include qigong and daoyin. Some thinkers, like those in Taoism, believe the two are an indivisible whole. They suggest that moral judgments like good and bad are just perceptions. Other thinkers, such as Dong Zhongshu, added a moral layer to the idea. This shows how one simple concept can touch many different subjects.
