Taoist philosophy is a set of ideas from China. It focuses on living in harmony with the Dào. The Dào is a mysterious and deep principle. It is the source and pattern of the entire universe. Some thinkers see it as an organic order. Others see it as a special state of awareness. This way of thinking is very diverse. It does not come from just one single teacher. Instead, it grew from many different Chinese beliefs.

Many ideas help people follow the Dào. One important idea is wúwéi, or "effortless action." This is like water flowing in a river. You go with the flow instead of fighting it. People also study yīn and yáng. These are two sides that work together. They show how things change and transform. Another idea is qì, which is a kind of spirit. People use meditation to help balance their spirit. This helps them stay calm and natural.

History shows that these ideas grew over a long time. During the Han dynasty, scholars grouped certain texts together. They called this group "Daojia," or philosophical Taoism. They used this label to organize many different thinkers. Some of these thinkers may have never even met. The legend of a person named Laozi was also created during this time. However, scholars say this legend has no historical proof. The ideas were actually shaped by many different schools of thought.

Several famous books are part of this tradition. The Daodejing is the most central text. It offers wise advice on living and governing. Another important book is the Zhuangzi. It teaches that people can live beyond social rules. The I Ching is also linked to these ideas. There are even 1,400 texts in the Taoist canon. These texts include the Neiye and the Lüshi Chunqiu. Each book offers a different way to understand life.

These ideas connect to how we see the world today. Taoism is different from Confucianism in many ways. Confucianism focuses more on politics and human rules. Taoism puts more emphasis on spiritual cultivation. It teaches people to find a balanced heart-mind. A person with a calm mind is called a sage. Sages are humble and move naturally with life. They try to live in accord with unseen forces. This helps them find peace within the constant flow of life.
