Yin and yang are ideas from ancient China.

They describe two forces that work together. These forces are opposites. Yet, they also support each other. They form a system where the whole is greater than its parts.

One force is called yin. It is seen as passive or quiet. It is linked to the moon and the shade on a hill.

The other force is yang. It is seen as active or bright. It is linked to the sun and the sunny side of a hill.

Many people believe these forces come from a primary energy called qi. This energy organizes into yin and yang to make the world. People see these patterns in nature. You can see them in the seasons or the day and night.

These ideas help many things in China. They are used in traditional medicine. They also guide martial arts like kung fu and tai chi. Some thinkers say these two parts are one single whole. They believe you cannot truly separate them. This idea helps people understand how the world stays in balance.
