The Luther Bible is a famous translation of the Bible into the German language. It was created by a man named Martin Luther, who was a Protestant reformer.

Before Luther, many German Bibles were very hard to understand. Some were translated word-for-word from Latin, which made them sound unnatural. Luther wanted his version to sound like real, spoken German. He used a method called dynamic equivalence. This means he focused on the meaning of the phrases rather than just the exact words. This helped the text feel alive to the people reading it.

Luther did not complete this massive task all by himself. He worked with a team of smart helpers and scholars. Philip Melanchthon helped him with the Greek parts of the text. Matthäus Aurogallus was a scholar who helped with the Hebrew.

They used the original Greek and Hebrew languages to make the translation accurate. They also looked at the Latin Vulgate and a Greek version by Erasmus of Rotterdam. This group effort ensured the Bible was both meaningful and deeply rooted in the original texts.

This big project took up many of Luther's later years. He first published his New Testament translation in September 1522. People called this version the "September Bible." He wrote the initial version in just eleven weeks while staying at Wartburg Castle.

Later, in 1534, the complete Bible was finally printed. This full version contained 75 books, including the Old Testament, the New Testament, and the Apocrypha. Luther continued to make small improvements to his writing until 1545.

The 1534 edition was a very special book for its time. It was printed by the Hans Lufft press in Wittenberg.

This version was printed on 1,824 pages across two large volumes. It even included 117 beautiful woodcut illustrations to help tell the stories. The Bible became a huge bestseller during Luther's life. About 200,000 copies were printed before he died in 1546. However, it was still quite expensive for many people. An unbound copy could cost a worker a whole month's wages.

Luther's work changed the way people used language in Germany. Because the new printing press could make many copies, his Bible spread very quickly. This helped create the modern High German language that people use today. It also helped more people learn how to read. Even after Luther died, people kept making new versions of his Bible. Some versions tried to fix errors, while others tried to make the old words easier to understand. His translation remained a very important part of German life for hundreds of years.
