He wanted to make a German Bible. Before him, many German Bibles were hard to read. Some were written word-for-word from Latin. They did not sound like natural German. Luther wanted his version to sound like real speech. He used a style called dynamic equivalence. This means he focused on the meaning of the words.

Luther did not work by himself. He had a team of helpers. Philip Melanchthon helped with Greek. Matthäus Aurogallus helped with Hebrew. They used the original Greek and Hebrew texts. This was new for many people. Luther also used the Latin Vulgate. He finished the New Testament in 1522. This was called the "September Bible." Later, in 1534, the full Bible was printed. It had 75 books. It even had 117 woodcut pictures.

The new printing press helped spread his work. His Bible helped shape the modern German language. It was a bestseller. Many churches and schools bought it. It was still very expensive for most workers.
