The Kojiki is a very important book from Japan. It is often called the oldest literary work in the country.

This book is a collection of many different things. It contains myths, legends, and hymns. It also includes genealogies, which are lists of family ancestors.

These stories help explain how the Japanese islands began. They also talk about the kami, which are the gods of Japan. The book is famous because it helps us understand ancient Japanese beliefs.

Writing the Kojiki was a long and careful task. It did not happen all at once. Long ago, different clans kept their own family records. Some of these records were lost in a fire during the year 645. Later, Emperor Tenmu asked a man named Hieda no Are to memorize many traditions. Hieda no Are had an exceptional memory.

In the year 711, Empress Genmei gave a new order. She asked a courtier named Ō no Yasumaro to write everything down. He finished the work and gave it to her in 712.

There were many reasons why the leaders wanted this book. One reason was to show why the imperial family should rule. The stories say the rulers come from heavenly deities.

The book also tried to bring different groups together. It gave many clans a place in the national history. This helped organize the people into new ranks and titles. It was a way to create a single, official story for the whole nation. This helped the government stay strong and unified.

For a long time, the Kojiki was not very popular. Many people studied a different book called the Nihon Shoki instead. The Kojiki was even lost for a while during the Kamakura period.

It only became widely read when printing became common. In 1644, the first printed edition was made in Kyoto. Later, a scholar named Motoori Norinaga changed how people saw the book. He spent 34 years writing a massive study called Kojiki-den. He believed the Kojiki was a very pure source of Japanese identity.

The book is divided into three main sections. The first part is called the Kamitsumaki.

This section focuses on the Age of the Gods. It tells the stories of how the world was created. The book also includes many short songs and poems. These poems are often spoken by gods or heroes. Some parts are written in Classical Chinese. Other parts use a special way to write Japanese sounds. This makes the Kojiki a very special piece of literature.
