It is one of the most respected books of poems in Japan. People cherish it because it captures many different voices from long ago. The title can be understood in a few special ways. Some scholars believe it means a "ten thousand leaves collection." In this view, poems are like the leaves on a tree.

Others think the name means a book for all generations. Some even suggest it refers to using a huge amount of paper.

This huge collection is organized into 20 different books.

Inside, you will find more than 4,500 individual poems. Most of these poems were written between the years 600 and 759. The poems are sorted into three main types or genres. The first group includes songs for banquets and trips. The second group consists of songs about love between men and women. The third group contains songs to mourn people who have died.

Many different kinds of people wrote these beautiful poems.

You can find verses written by the Emperor and wealthy aristocrats. Soldiers and junior officials also left their words behind. Even street performers and peasants contributed to the collection. There are more than 2,100 poems where we do not know the author. Some poems are long, while others are short. There are 4,207 short poems and 265 long poems in total.

Historians believe the collection was put together after the year 759.

Many experts believe a person named Ōtomo no Yakamochi was the final compiler. He lived during the Nara period and was a great poet himself. He wrote the very last dated poem in the book in 759. The collection also uses an old writing system called Man'yōgana. This system uses Chinese characters to represent Japanese sounds. This way of writing helped lead to the modern Japanese writing used today.

Nature plays a very big role in these ancient verses.

The poems mention more than 150 different kinds of trees and grasses. Because these plants are so important, people even built special gardens. These botanical gardens try to grow every plant species mentioned in the book. You can find dozens of these gardens located all around Japan. One of the first was opened at the Kasuga Shrine in 1932. Reading the Man'yōshū is like taking a trip back in time.
