People also call it the Shijing or the Book of Songs. It is one of the Five Classics used in Confucianism. This book is important because it is the oldest collection of Chinese poetry still around today. It contains 305 different works. These poems were written between the 11th and 7th centuries BC. Scholars have studied and memorized these songs for over two thousand years. They even help people learn how people spoke in the very distant past.

The poems are organized into different groups with special names. The largest group is called the "Airs of the States," or Guofeng. These are short folk songs written in simple language. They tell stories about the lives of regular people. These songs talk about love, farming, and housework. Some poems even act as protests against leaders.

The other parts are called "Hymns" and "Eulogies." These are longer songs used for big ceremonies. They were often sung by nobles to honor ancestors or pray for good harvests.

Many of these songs were once performed with music. The oldest songs, like the hymns, had a slow and heavy sound. People played instruments like bells, drums, and stone chimes to accompany them.

Most of the poems use a specific rhythm. About 95% of the lines use a four-syllable pattern. This pattern has a tiny pause in the middle. The poems also use a lot of repetition. Some lines or phrases stay exactly the same in each stanza. This helps create a beautiful and steady style for the listener.

History tells us how these songs were gathered together. Long ago, officials traveled to different states to collect local verses. They might have visited during the harvest time. These officials turned different local ways of speaking into a standard language.

Tradition says that the famous teacher Confucius helped edit the book. He is said to have picked 305 poems from a much larger group of 3,000. He chose the ones that fit best with traditional rituals. This careful selection is why the book became a classic. Even today, the poems provide many special four-character phrases used in Chinese.

The Classic of Poetry connects the past to the present in many ways. Even though the original music is lost, the words remain.

Scholars use the rhyme patterns to study Old Chinese sounds. This helps them reconstruct how the language sounded long ago. The poems also show us how people felt about their world. They show the joys of love and the hard work of farming. By reading them, we can almost hear the voices of people from thousands of years ago.
