Some people think he wrote the poems in the Wen Xuan book. This book was put together by Xiao Tong much later. Xiao Tong lived between the years 501 and 531. Scholars are not sure if Song Yu wrote every single poem.

Song Yu's work left a big mark on Chinese culture. He wrote about the beauty of nature in his poems. His writing often carries a feeling of sadness or pathos. This helped later poets find new ways to express feelings. Many Chinese idioms used today come from his poems.
