The Chinese classics are very special books from ancient China. They were written before the Qin dynasty began in 221 BC. In Chinese, the word for classic means "warp thread." This name comes from how the old books were bound together.

These books cover many different subjects. Some are histories or collections of poems. Other books teach about math, stars, or medicine. They even include ways to help people stay healthy. For many people, these books are the heart of their culture. They help people share the same values and ideas.

Learning these books was a big job for students. Many children first memorized the Three Character Classic. They also learned the Hundred Family Surnames to practice. Later, they studied the larger groups of classics.

During the Ming and Qing dynasties, these books were required for study. If you wanted to be a scholar-official, you had to pass tests on them. You even had to memorize them to become a military officer. This shared learning helped the educated people feel connected to one another.

There is a famous story about these books and the Qin dynasty. After Qin Shi Huang became the first emperor in 221 BC, some say books were lost. A man named Li Si thought some books were dangerous to the government. He reportedly wanted to stop people from reading certain poems and histories. He believed these stories might make people unhappy with the new rules. However, modern historians have many doubts about this story. Some think the books were actually safe during that time. Others believe many books were lost when the Qin palace burned in 207 BC.

One very important group is the Five Classics. These became part of the official school lessons during the Western Han dynasty. The Classic of Poetry is one part of this group. It contains 305 poems, including folk songs and hymns. Another part is the Book of Documents, which may date back to the 6th century BC. There is also the I Ching, which uses a system to tell the future.

Scholars like Liu Xiang worked hard to edit and organize these texts. His son, Liu Xin, helped finish the work his father started.

Later, a scholar named Zhu Xi chose a group called the Four Books. He picked these during the Song dynasty to teach Confucianism. One of these is the Analects, which is a collection of talks by Confucius. Another is the Mencius, which features long conversations with a scholar named Mencius.

By the Ming dynasty, students studied the Thirteen Classics to pass exams. This was a huge task because they had to learn 600,000 characters. They also had to study millions of characters in the notes written about the books. These ancient words still help us understand history today.
