It was published in 1750 during the Qing dynasty. This book is a satire, which means it uses humor to tease people. The story looks at the lives of academic scholars. It shows how these intellectuals act in society. Many people consider it one of the great Classic Chinese Novels. It is special because it uses a very unique way of telling stories.

The novel does not follow just one hero. Instead, it uses a loose and sprawling way of writing. The story might follow one person for a few chapters. Then, it moves to a new character at a party or a social event.

This new character might have met the first person earlier. This creates a mosaic of many different lives. The stories often teach lessons about how to behave. Some stories show good Confucian behavior. Other stories mock scholars who are too ambitious.

Wu Jingzi wrote this during the Qing dynasty. However, he set the stories in the Ming period. This was a clever way to avoid trouble. Criticizing the ruling Qing leaders could lead to punishment. By writing about the older Ming era, he stayed safe.

The characters in the book are intellectuals. Some might even be based on the author's own friends. He uses these people to show different sides of life. Some characters are very wise and kind. Others are hypocrites who pretend to be good.

There are many important facts about this book's history. The earliest printed versions of the book are hard to find. One of the oldest known copies is the 1803 "Wo" edition. Later, the "Su" edition became very popular among readers.

In 1920, a new version called the Yadong edition was published. This book was also very important for how people write. It was one of the first major novels to use baihua. This is a style of writing that sounds like real speech. Before this, many writers used a much harder style called wenyan.

The Scholars has changed how people think about language and art. In the early 20th century, reformers used the book to support new ideas. They felt the old writing style was a form of snobbery. The novel also influenced many other famous Chinese books. These include works like Officialdom Unmasked and The Travels of Lao Can. It remains a very important piece of literature today. It shows us the complex lives of people from the past. Even today, historians use these stories to learn about old culture.
