These scholars live during the Ming dynasty.

Some scholars in the book are good people. They follow Confucian ways. They act with kindness and honor. Other scholars act very badly. They only care about fame and money. Some scholars are even hypocrites. They talk about being good, but they act mean. They might even hurt their own families to get power.

The book has a special way of telling stories. It does not have just one main hero. Instead, it follows many different people. The stories often move from one person to another at big parties.

This book was one of the first to use a style called baihua. This is a way of writing that sounds like real speech. It helped change how people wrote in China. Many other famous books were inspired by this great work.
