Tang worked as a government official for many years. He was known for being fair and honest. He even spoke up when he saw things going wrong in the government. Later, he retired to his home to focus on writing.

Tang is most famous for his plays. He wrote four great plays called the Four Dreams. These stories use dreams to explore how people feel. His most famous work is called The Peony Pavilion. This play is a masterpiece about the power of love. It celebrates human feelings and the spirit.

His other plays have deep meanings too. One play, Record of Handan, uses a story to talk about how fame does not last. Another, Record of the Southern Bough, follows a man who dreams of success in an ant-kingdom. These stories help people think about life.

Today, people still perform his plays. They use a style of opera called kunqu. His writing changed Chinese theater. It moved from simple fun to deep ways of thinking about the world.
