Ma Zhiyuan helped make a type of poetry called sanqu. Sanqu is a form of lyric poetry. His poems are found in a book called "Dongli Yuefu." This book has 104 short poems. It also has 17 song suites, which are groups of songs.

One of his most famous poems is "Autumn Thoughts." It uses ten images to show a feeling of sadness. The poem mentions crows, a small bridge, and a stream. It also speaks of a lean horse on an old road.

Ma Zhiyuan also wrote plays. Seven of his plays still exist today. One play is called "Autumn in Han Palace." This play tells the story of Emperor Yuandi and Wang Zhaojun.
