He was born in 1550 in Linchuan, Jiangxi. Tang is remembered for changing Chinese theater forever. Before him, plays were mostly for simple fun. He turned drama into a way to explore deep ideas about life. His stories use dreams to connect what people want with the real world. People still perform his works today using a beautiful style of opera called kunqu.

Tang's life was a mix of government work and creative writing. He spent many years working as an official in different places. He served in cities like Nanjing, Zhejiang, and Guangdong.

He was known for being a very honest leader. He even wrote letters to the emperor to report unfair things in the government. In 1593, he became the magistrate of Suichang County in Zhejiang Province. He was so respected by local people for his fairness. Eventually, he retired in 1598 to focus on his books.

His most famous writings are called the Four Dreams of Linchuan.

These four plays are also known as the Four Dreams of the White Camellia Hall. The first play is called The Purple Hairpin. He began this work in 1573 and finished it fourteen years later. His greatest masterpiece is a play called The Peony Pavilion. This story celebrates the power of human love and spirit. He also wrote Record of Handan and Record of the Southern Bough.

Each of these four plays has a special meaning about life.

In The Purple Hairpin, he described the story as a small piece of his obsession. The Peony Pavilion was his way of saying he would live and die for that same feeling. Record of the Southern Bough shows a man dreaming of success in an ant-kingdom. That character wakes up to find his life of power was just an illusion. Record of Handan uses a story about a scholar to show that fame does not last. These stories help readers think about what is truly important.

Tang's ideas were very different from the strict rules of his time. He believed that human feelings and love were more important than cold logic.

He studied many different teachings, including Confucianism, Taoism, and Zen Buddhism. This helped him write stories that were very imaginative and strange. His style was so good that other writers started their own school called the Linchuan school. Even though he lived hundreds of years ago, his work is still studied. You can find English translations of his plays in books published as recently as 2018. He died in 1616, the same year the famous writer William Shakespeare died.
