Long ago in China, people wrote special books. These are called the Chinese classics. They were written before the year 221 BC. The word "classic" means "warp thread" in Chinese. This refers to how the books were bound.

Scholars studied them to get important jobs. To pass tests, they had to learn them by heart. One group of books is the Five Classics. These include the Classic of Poetry, which has 305 poems. There is also the I Ching. This book uses a system to tell the future.

Later, a man named Zhu Xi chose the Four Books. These books teach the main ideas of Confucianism. They include the Analects. This book is a collection of talks by Confucius. His ideas helped shape many lands. In the Ming dynasty, students studied the Thirteen Classics. They had to learn over 600,000 characters. This hard work helped people share the same values.
