Classical Chinese is a very old way of writing. It was used for famous books long ago.

Shi Jing
Shi Jing

This style is very short. Each character usually means one whole word. Because it is so brief, it can be hard to read. You might need special training to understand it.

For a long time, scholars copied this style. They called this later form Literary Chinese. It was used for formal writing in China for many years. This way of writing spread to other places too. It reached Vietnam, Korea, and Japan.

In these lands, it was a common way to write. People used it for school and for government work.

Even today, we can see traces of it. Some laws in Taiwan are still written in a part of this style. The national anthem of the Republic of China uses it too. Many students still study it in school. They learn how to turn these old words into modern speech. It is a big part of history that still connects people today.
