Classical Chinese

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Classical Chinese is a special way of writing from long ago. It was used to write the most famous books in Chinese history.

Shi Jing
Shi Jing

This style is very short and direct. In this language, one written character almost always stands for a single word. Because it uses so few words, it is called a terse style. This makes it quite hard to understand without special training. Even people who speak modern Chinese find it difficult to read. It is a beautiful but very compact way to share ideas.

For many years, scholars copied this old style to make something called Literary Chinese. They used it for almost all formal writing in China until the early 20th century.

This way of writing was not just for China. It spread to places like Vietnam, Korea, and Japan. It became a common way for people in those countries to write to each other. This group of countries is sometimes called the Sinosphere. People used it for government work and for scholarly talk. They even made special notes to help them read it in their own local languages.

History tells us that this writing style has deep roots. The term refers to language used from about the 5th century BCE until the end of the Han dynasty in 220 CE. Some people call the even older works "pre-Classical Chinese." This includes the Five Classics, which were written between the 11th and 7th centuries BCE.

A famous leader named Qin Shi Huang ordered many books to be burned in 213 BCE. This meant many old records were lost forever. Even the books we have today are often copies made many centuries after they were first written. We only have small pieces of some very old lists of books.

Learning how to say these words was a big job for people in the past. Since the characters do not show exactly how to speak them, people had to find new ways. In the 2nd century CE, they created the fanqie method to describe sounds. Later, a very important dictionary called the Qieyun was made in 601 CE.

A man named Lu Fayan helped create it to help people use the same sounds. It used the best ways of speaking from two big cities. This dictionary helped people write poems that sounded right. It became the standard for many years for students taking big exams.

Today, we still see this old writing in interesting places. Most people now use modern Chinese for everyday life. However, some laws in Taiwan are still written in a part of this literary style. Lawyers there must learn it to do their jobs well. The national anthem of the Republic of China also uses these old words.

In Japan, students still study these characters in high school. It is a bit like how people used to use Latin in Europe. It connects the modern world to the great stories of the past.
