Classical Latin is a special form of writing. It was the high standard used by writers during the late Roman Republic and the early Roman Empire.

Today, when people say "Latin," they usually mean this specific version. Most modern textbooks focus on teaching this style to students. It was a language used for important things like poetry and speeches.

This style was called *Latinitas*, or "Latinity." It was also known as *sermo urbanus*, which means "speech of the city."

Learning this language involved following many strict rules. Students in schools studied these rules to write polished texts.

People used different versions of Latin for different tasks. They called common, everyday speech *Vulgar Latin*. This was different from the higher register used by the "good families." Even though it was very careful, it was still a spoken language. It was not just a stiff or artificial way of talking.

The idea of "classical" comes from a very old Roman concept. The Romans used the word *classicus* to mean something "first-class" or "select."

This word was related to social classes and even military ranks. It described authors who wrote in a way that was considered a perfect model. In the second century AD, a teacher named Marcus Cornelius Fronto used this idea. He called great writers *scriptores classici*, meaning "reliable authors." These writers set the standard for everyone else to follow.

Scholars have different ways to group the history of this language. A man named Wilhelm Siegmund Teuffel created a famous system of ages.

He divided the time into different periods based on history. One very famous time is the Golden Age. This period lasted from about 80 BC to AD 14. It includes the time of the famous writer Cicero and the emperor Augustus.

Many people throughout history have looked back at these old models. During the Renaissance, people tried to bring back this "best" form of Latin. This led to a new style called Neo-Latin.

Even in the 1700s, writers used dictionaries to turn English into proper Latin. The study of these ancient texts is a huge part of how we understand history. By looking at these old books, we see how people once shared their most important ideas. It connects the ancient world to the way we study languages today.
