Literary language

Literary language is a special way of using words. It is a formal style used for writing and polite speaking. People often use it for school, books, or official business. This style is sometimes called a standardized variety. It can look very different from the way people talk every day. When a written language and a spoken language are very different, it is called diglossia.

This means people use two different versions of the same language in different parts of life.

Many languages have specific ways to switch between these styles. In Arabic, people use Modern Standard Arabic for formal writing and speaking. This version is based on Classical Arabic. Many educated speakers can use code-switching to move between these two styles. They might even switch styles in the middle of one sentence. This helps people from different places understand each other. For example, a Moroccan speaker and a Kuwaiti speaker might use Modern Standard Arabic to communicate.

English has a long history of using different styles. After the Norman conquest, Latin and French were the main official languages. A standard literary English did not appear until the end of the Middle Ages. During the Renaissance, writers used a practice called aureation. This means they added words from classical languages into their poetry. This helped the English language gain more status. Many of those special words are still used in common English today.

There are many famous examples of literary English from the past. The King James Bible and the plays of William Shakespeare are very important. These works from the 17th century are called prototype mediums of literary English. Students in advanced classes still study them today. Many words we use now come from these famous writings. English is also used as a literary language in many places. This includes India, Nigeria, and Malaysia.

Other languages also have unique literary rules. In Bengali, the literary form is called Shadhubhasha. It uses more special words than the everyday spoken form. The national anthem of India was originally written in this style. In German, writers use the genitive case more often than people do in casual talk. Some languages, like Finnish, even create a literary version by mixing different dialects together. Each language finds its own way to make writing feel special and formal.
