Dialect

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

A dialect is a special way of speaking used by a specific group of people. It is a variety of a language that can be shaped by where people live or their social group. Some dialects are called standard varieties. These are supported by big groups like governments or schools. They are often used in textbooks and official books. For example, the French language is a standardized version.

Other ways of speaking are called nonstandard or vernacular. These still have their own rules and words. However, they do not always get support from official institutions. The difference between a standard and a nonstandard dialect is often based on history or culture.

Dialects differ in several specific ways. They can have different sounds, which is called phonology. They can also use different word structures, known as morphology. Some use different sentence rules, or syntax. They might even use completely different words, which is called vocabulary. When people write down an oral dialect, they might use something called eye dialect. This helps show how the words actually sound when spoken.

These small changes help us see how people's speech is unique to them.

It is sometimes hard to decide if a variety is a dialect or a new language. One way to check is through linguistic distance. This looks at how much two ways of speaking actually differ. If the differences are small, they are often called siblings or dialects. For example, Dutch and German are siblings in the West-Germanic group. French and Spanish are also siblings in the Romance branch. If the distance is very high, they are seen as separate languages. This helps experts group languages into families.

Another way to look at it is through mutual intelligibility. This means checking if two speakers can understand each other. If they can understand each other well, they might be speaking dialects. Some experts use a specific number to decide this. The SIL International group looks for a threshold of 70% to 85%. If people understand a central way of speaking at that level, they form a dialect cluster. If the understanding is lower, it might be called a language cluster instead.

Sometimes, the names we use are about politics and power. In China, Mandarin and Cantonese are called dialects, even if they are hard to understand together. In other places, a dialect might be called a language if it has its own written form. For instance, Romansh is recognized as a language because it is written down. This is true even though it is very close to other alpine dialects. National boundaries and social status often change how we name the way people speak. The labels we use can depend on who is doing the naming.
