Variety (linguistics)

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People speak in many different ways across the world. Experts use the word "variety" to describe these different forms of language. A variety can be a whole language or just a small part of one. It can also be a style or a special way of talking. Using the word variety helps avoid confusion between languages and dialects. It is a neutral way to talk about all kinds of speech.

One common type of variety is called a dialect. A dialect is a way of speaking used by a specific group of people. These groups might be linked by where they live or their social class. Some dialects are tied to ethnic groups or certain cultural groups. Dialects have their own unique grammar and vocabulary. They also have their own special sounds. People often use the word "accent" to describe sounds. However, an accent only covers pronunciation, while a dialect covers much more.

Many languages have what is called a standard variety. This is a version of a language that is often promoted by schools or the media. People often think of the standard variety as the "correct" way to speak. This is not because it is better than other ways. It is simply a version that many people agree to use. Some official groups even help set the rules for these standards. Other times, the standard is just what people agree is "good" English.

People also change how they speak depending on where they are. This is known as a "register" or a style. You might use a formal register in a professional setting. You might use a different style, like baby talk, when speaking to a child. Some jobs even have special words called jargon. A person might even shift their style during a single conversation. For example, a receptionist might start formally and then speak casually to a friend.

Finally, every single person has their own unique way of speaking. This is called an "idiolect." An idiolect is a language variety that belongs to just one individual. It is shaped by the many things that person experiences. Their regional dialect and social group can influence their idiolect. Even the languages they know can change how they speak. Some experts see an idiolect as a person's own private speech community.
