Variety (linguistics)

geography Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People speak in many different ways. Experts call these ways "varieties." A variety can be a whole language. It can also be a small part of a language.

One kind is a dialect. A dialect is a way of speaking used by a group. This group might live in one area. We call this a regional dialect. Some groups speak differently because of their social class. Others speak differently because of their ethnic group. Dialects have their own words and grammar. They also have their own sounds. People often use the word "accent" for sounds. But an accent is only about how words sound. A dialect includes sounds, words, and grammar.

Sometimes we use a "standard" variety. This is a version of a language that many people think is "correct." Schools and news shows often use it. It is not better than other ways of speaking. It is just a common way that people agree to use.

We also use different styles in different places. This is called a "register." You might use a formal style at work. You might use a different style when talking to a baby. You might even use special words for your job. This is called jargon. Finally, every single person has a unique way of speaking. This is called an "idiolect."
