Sociolect

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People speak in many different ways. Some groups use special words or patterns. This is called a sociolect. A sociolect is not about where you live. It is about the groups you belong to. This could be your age, your job, or your culture.

One group might use the word "pop" for a drink. Another group might call it "soda." This is a regional dialect. A sociolect is different. It is based on social groups. For example, people in the same ethnic group might speak a certain way. This can happen anywhere in a country.

In some places, people use two ways of speaking. This is called diglossia. In Arabic-speaking nations, people use one style for formal things. They might use it for a sermon or a news story. They use a different, casual style with family and friends.

Sometimes, people switch between these styles. This is called code-switching. They might switch to fit a situation. It helps them show who they are. It also helps people from different groups talk to each other.
