Sociolinguistics

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

People talk in many different ways. They use different words with friends or family. They might use other words at school or work. This study is called sociolinguistics. It is the scientific study of how society shapes language.

Experts look at how groups use language. They study how age, gender, or religion change speech. They also look at where people live. A big river or a mountain can change how people talk. These different ways of speaking are called dialects.

Some groups form a speech community. This is a group of people who use language in a special way. This could be a sports team or a group of fans. They might use slang or special words. These words help the group feel close.

Sometimes, people think one way of speaking is better than another. This is called prestige. Some ways of speaking have high prestige. Others have low prestige. But people might use a low prestige way to show pride. This can show they belong to a neighborhood or a group. This is called covert prestige. Researchers study this by listening to real life talks. They use interviews and recordings to learn more.
