Ethnomethodology

society Maturity 11-13 Next article →

How do people make life feel orderly? This is a big question. One way to study it is through ethnomethodology. This is a long word. It means studying the ways people act in groups.

Harold Garfinkel started this study. In 1954, he looked at how a jury works. A jury is a group of people in a court. He watched how they talked. He saw how they decided if someone was guilty. He saw how they shared facts.

This study does not use old rules. Garfinkel wanted to see what people actually do. He did not want to use his own ideas. He called this being indifferent. It means he let the group lead the way.

Researchers must learn how to act like the group. This helps them see the truth. This study helps us see how people make sense of the world. It can even help people design new computer software. It helps us see how we all work together every day.
