Slang

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Slang is a special way of speaking. It uses words and phrases for everyday talk. People do not use slang in formal writing. They also avoid it in serious speeches. Slang is often used by specific groups of people. These groups use it to show they belong together. It can also act like a secret code. This keeps outsiders from joining the talk.

Slang changes very fast. It is a lively and creative way to speak. Some slang words are made from old words. For example, the word "lit" used to mean on fire. Now, many people use it to mean something is awesome. Other words come from movies or songs.

Sometimes, slang does not stay secret. If many people use a word, it can become a regular word. The word "strenuous" was once seen as slang. Now, it is a common word in English. Some say slang is only slang until it enters a dictionary. Once it is in a dictionary, it is part of the main language. Slang helps us show our personality and our world.
