Etymologists look at how words change over time. They look at how sounds and meanings shift. They use many tools to solve this puzzle. Some experts read very old books. They look at how people used words in the past.

Other experts use the comparative method. This means they compare different languages. They look for a shared parent language. For example, many European words come from one big family.

Words can also change their meaning. Long ago, the word "bead" meant a prayer. People used small objects to count their prayers. Soon, the word meant the objects themselves. This is a type of semantic change.

In ancient India, scholars studied Sanskrit. They believed speech was sacred. They did deep work on word roots. This work helped modern science grow. Today, etymology is a very serious science. It helps us map the history of how we speak.
