Lexicology

language culture Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Have you ever wondered how words work? Experts study this in a field called lexicology. They look at every part of a word. This includes how we spell it and its meaning. They also look at where a word began.

Many words travel from one land to another. We call these loan words. The word mango comes from Hindi. The word coconut comes from Portuguese. Some music words come from Italian. These include piano and solo. English has many loan words. In fact, it has more loan words than native ones.

Words can change over time. Some experts study how words grow and change. This is called historical lexicology. Other experts look at how words work right now. This is called descriptive lexicology. A man named Ferdinand de Saussure thought of these ways.

Words also work in groups. Some groups are called idioms. An idiom is a phrase like "raining cats and dogs." The whole phrase has a new meaning. You cannot know the meaning by looking at each word alone. This study is called phraseology. Studying words also helps people make dictionaries. This job is called lexicography.
